Stare. It is the way to educate your eye, and more. Stare, pry, listen, eavesdrop. Die knowing something. You are not here long. Walker Evans |

I live in northern NH, surrounded by wondrous natural beauty. This is surely inspiring, and some of my images clearly draw on this beauty. However, most of my images take a different view. I believe there is beauty and grace to be found everywhere; my task is to learn to see it. In my work I set out to find the sublime in the commonplace: to explore the subtle grace that surrounds us, but is often overlooked in our rush through life. Instead of purely representational work, I am interested in images that suggest aspects of the natural world. I believe this helps me explore more deeply into the essence of the subject. In this way, I think of my work as akin to poetry, not prose. These photographs are the result of spending extended time with the subject – and learning to see in new ways. Because my work depends so heavily on developing a relationship with the subject, the vast majority of my images are taken within walking distance of my home, or in nearby locations where I return again and again. |
